2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION


2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Swallowing this material causes intense burning of the mouth and throat, followed by abdominal pain and nausea; these effects may be delayed.

Eye

Eye contact produces severe corneal damage.

Skin

This material penetrates intact skin rapidly as a liquid or vapour, producing burns and dermatitis. The local effects of this material on the skin are those of skin discolouration, becoming anesthetised, followed by progressive itching, pain and tissue destruction.

Inhaled

Acute exposures by all routes of absorption may cause muscular weakness, gastric disturbances, severe depression, shock, collapse, and death. Although the effects are primarily on the central nervous system, edema of the lungs and injury to the kidneys, liver, heart, pancreas and spleen may also occur.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Repeated exposure may result in digestive disturbances, lung damage, damage to the liver & kidneys, & skin eruptions. Some individuals may be hypersensitive to this product. Material is not listed as a carcinogen by IARC, NTP or OSHA.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

Quickly give 1 - 3 glasses of milk or water to drink. Seek medical attention immediately.

Eye

Immediately flush the eyes with plenty of running water, including under the eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. If irritation persists seek medical attention.

Skin

Immediately wash from the skin by removing contaminated clothing and flushing the exposed area with plenty of water and soap. If irritation persists seek medical attention.

Inhaled

Remove to fresh air. Have qualified person restore and/or support breathing with oxygen, if needed. Keep person warm. If difficulties persist seek medical attention.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE


3.1 Exposure Standards

The following Exposure Standards have been established by Worksafe : Phenol : TWA 5 ppm [19 mg/m3] ; can be absorbed through the skin Cresol, all isomers : TWA 5 ppm [22 mg/m3] ; can be absorbed through the skin

3.2 Engineering Controls

Use adequate ventilation to control exposure to below recommended levels.

3.3 Personal Protection

Respiratory - use NIOSH/MSHA approved air purifying respirator equipped with organic vapour cartridge(s) when concentrations exceed recommended exposure levels. Eyes - wear chemical safety goggles and a full face shield to protect against splashing. Skin - wear chemical resistant gloves when handling this material. Heavy PVC or butyl-viton is recommended. Other - impervious protective clothing and chemically resistant footwear.

3.4 Flammability

Material will burn if ignited.

4.1 Storage / Transport

Store in accordance with all Commonwealth, State or Territory regulations relevant to Class 6 substances. Transport in accordance with the n Dangerous Goods Code. Keep containers tightly sealed. Avoid use of aluminium, copper and brass alloys in contact with this material in storage and equipment.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Evacuate area. Shut off ignition sources. Only trained personnel should respond to spills or leaks. Wear protective equipment and/or garments as specified in Section 3.3. When entry must be made into an area where the concentration is unknown, use NIOSH/MSHA approved self-contained breathing apparatus and protective equipment as described in Section 3.3.

Disposal

The materials resulting from clean-up operations of a spill may be hazardous and therefore, subject to specific regulations. Package, store, transport and dispose of all clean-up materials and any contaminated equipment in accordance with all applicable Federal, State and Local regulations. Shipments of waste materials may be subject to manifesting requirements per applicable regulations. Appropriate disposal will depend on the nature of the waste and should be performed by competent and properly permitted contractors. Ensure that all responsible Federal, State and Local agencies receive proper notification of spill and disposal methods.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Container explosion may occur under fire conditions. This material is incompatible with strong oxidising agents. Hazardous polymerisation is not known to occur. Hazardous decomposition products include carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide when the material burns.

Extinguishing Media

Use water fog, AFFF foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide type extinguishers. Use water fog or spray to cool exposed equipment. Use foam to control spill fire. Avoid contact with runoff water.
